What is the primary function of hydrochloric acid in the stomach?

primary function of hydrochloric acid in the stomach

Hydrochloric acid plays an important role in the stomach. It creates a highly acidic environment that is essential for digestion and protection.

Function of hydrochloric acid in the stomach

1. Protein Digestion

HCL or hydrochloric acid helps in breaking down complex protein structures into simple forms. Or imagine protein like a complecated tangled, folded rope, the HLC helps in unwinding or unfolding of the complex structure and thus making it easier for the digestion and breakdown. A simple scientific term, it can be explained as “Hydrochloric acid denatures proteins.”

2. Enzyme activation

In the stomach, these unfolded proteins then start breaking down into simple or smaller parts known as peptides.  For this, they need the enzyme Pepsin. But this pepsin is present in the stomach in inactivated form, which is known as Pepsinogen. For the activation of pepsin from pepsinogen, the stomach also needs hydrochloric acid.

Therefore, we can say that without sufficient HCl, protein digestion would be significantly impaired.

The acidic environment created by the acid hydrochloric acid also helps in the activation of other enzymes like lingual lipase (This enzyme helps in the breaking down of the dietary fats).

3. Protection against microorganisms

The stomach needs to have a strong defence mechanism, as we naturally ingest bacteria, viruses, and fungi with every meal. Therefore stomach is your body’s first line of defense against foodborne illness. Hence, the hydrochloric acid in the stomach creates a highly acidic environment. This acidic environment not only kills the harmful bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens but also acts as a biological barrier by neutralizing or killing the vast majority of these microorganisms before they can reach the intestines and cause infection.

Hence, in short, we can say that the primary function of hydrochloric acid in the stomach is
1. Breaking of complex proteins
2. Activation of pepsin and other enzymes.
3. Protection of the stomach from microorganisms.

What happens if the stomach doesn’t produce enough hydrochloric acid?

If your stomach doesn’t produce enough acid, then it can lead to the following issues

1. Improper food digestion

Protein unfolding will not occur properly due to la ack of hydrochloric acid, and their digestion will also become a huge problem. Which leads to nutrient malabsorption.

2. Enzyme inactivation

No hydrochloric acid or less hydrochloric acid will lead to a less acidic environment in the stomach. And thus enzymes like pepsinogens and ingual lipase will not activate and will not work, and food will not be absorbed and digested properly.

3. Increased susceptibility to infections

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is considered the body’s primary digestant and disinfectant. Absence of this acid will result in the growth of microorganisms in the stomach. There will be no disinfection, which leads to diseases nd other stomach-related issues.
