Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs)

Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs)

Introduction

A glacier is a massive body of ice, snow, sediment, and liquid water that forms on land and moves down-hill due to its weight and the force of gravity (1).

Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) are caused by the sudden release of large volumes of water from glacial lakes due to natural and climatic factors.

Rapid melting of glaciers because of rising temperatures increases the size and water level of glacial lakes, putting pressure on their natural dams made of ice or loose moraines.

Glacial lakes are surrounded by natural dams made of ice or loose moraines.  Heavy rainfall or intense snowfall can add excess water to these lakes.

As a result Earthquakes, avalanches, or landslides may strike the lake or weaken the dam, leading to its sudden collapse. And the stored water is released abruptly, causing destructive floods in downstream areas.

Global warming is the main reason behind the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). Recent catastrophic events in the Himalayas such as the devastating floods and glacial collapses along the Nepal-Tibet border region is one such big example.

Root cause for Glacial lake outburst floods

Faster “Third Pole” Warming

High-altitude mountain regions like the Himalayas are experiencing temperature increases faster than the global average.

Melting Ice and Thawing Permafrost

As global temperatures rise due to greenhouse gas emissions, glaciers are retreating rapidly.

Furthermore, high-altitude permafrost—the frozen “glue” holding mountain rock, ice, and snow together for millennia—is thawing, making steep slopes and mountain walls dangerously unstable.

Because of global warming and melting ice and thawing permafrost, catastrophic events happen triggering Glacial Lake Outburst Floods  and other climatic disasters.

Weather shifts and warming temperatures increase the frequency of rock-ice avalanches.

When a massive chunk of a destabilized mountain or glacier breaks off and crashes into a swollen glacial lake. It creates a colossal displacement wave.

This wave overtops or shatters the fragile moraine barrier, sending millions of cubic meters of water rushing down the valleys in an instant.

The Nepal Floods

  • Recent catastrophic flash floods and debris flows in the Himalayan regions. Including devastating events near the Nepal-Tibet border have highlighted this exact danger.
  • Massive rock-ice avalanches and sudden bursts sent walls of water, mud, and boulders roaring through river valleys.
  • Destroying bridges, highways, and villages, and displacing thousands of lives.
  • At international forums like the United Nations, leaders from nations like Nepal have explicitly pointed to these disasters as a stark “warning to the world.”
  • Emphasizing that developing countries least responsible for global emissions are bearing the heaviest consequences of climate change.
